Not everyone is a fan of photos, especially if you usually tend to look awkward in them.
In fact, your past experiences with photos could prevent you from scheduling a professional photo shoot session, something every woman, and especially those over 40, should consider doing.
Now is the time to get a little more comfortable in front of the camera and it’s easier than you might think.
Start with these simple tips that you can use for day-to-day photos and apply during any professional session.
- Don’t face the camera head-on. Facing the camera head-on makes anyone look bigger than they are, so if you already feel self-conscious in front of a camera, this is a top tip to keep in mind. Rather give your body an angle by turning your feet and shoulders slightly away from the camera. In saying that though, there are some poses that are done with you facing the camera directly. In these instances, the photographer should ensure the image does not make you look bigger - and there are ways to do this.
- Pay attention to your posture. Standing up tall and straight not only makes you feel more confident but also forces you to push your chin forward, getting rid of that pesky double chin.
- Give your arms and legs some space. Another trick if you want to look slimmer is to add some space between your legs as well as your arms and body.
- Relax. Stiffening your arms and legs can make you look stressed, which will impact your photos. Take a few breaths and shake your arms and legs to loosen up before you pose for any photo. You can also bend the knee that’s facing the camera and place your weight on your back leg to look more relaxed. As an added bonus, this also has a slimming effect.
- Forget the cheese. Saying cheese might be fun but it creates a forced smile. Instead, stay happy and have a few laughs before the camera clicks for a more natural smile.
And above all else, go into your photo session embracing your unique beauty. No need to get a new haircut or buy several different outfits, wear clothes, makeup, and a hairstyle that makes you feel truly good about yourself.
Photographing people is such an intimate experience. It allows me to connect with the person I'm photographing and enter their world for a moment in time. With just a simple photograph, I can express all the beauty that person holds within themselves.
