Planning a family photoshoot? It’s a whole different ballgame compared to individual sessions! With individuals, we can experiment with styles ranging from dramatic to light and airy. But with families, it’s all about coordination—styles, outfits, and overall vibe. And while I personally love dramatic shots, family sessions call for something more dynamic, fun, and full of smiles. Unless, of course, you want to go for a dramatic look, but let’s be real—that's not usually the goal with little ones running around!
Here’s the deal: capturing family photos can come with its own set of challenges. But don’t worry, I’ve got some tips to make the session smooth, fun, and memorable!
1. Dress to Impress (But Stay Comfortable!)
Outfits can make or break your family photos! Pick your outfits in advance, and aim for comfort and style. Dreaming of soft, elegant family photos? Go for neutral tones—think creams, soft pastels, oatmeals, and light grays. Feeling a bit more bold? Add fun pops of color like bright yellows or reds against gray hues. Accessories like scarves, hats, and headbands can add personality and flair to your photos too!
2. Rested and Fed = Happy Family
For families with young kids, timing is everything. Avoid booking your session around nap or bedtime—no one wants a cranky toddler in their photos! The best lighting is usually two hours before sunset or just after sunrise, but if that doesn’t work for you, no worries! A good photographer can find the perfect shady spot or adjust the location to get beautiful, glowing images at any time of day. Or, opt for a studio session where we can control the lighting completely.
3. Give Yourself Time to Shine
Moms, this one’s for you! Give yourself the gift of extra time to get ready. In the chaos of getting everyone else dressed, don’t forget to treat yourself to professional hair and makeup. When mom feels beautiful and confident, it sets a relaxed tone for the whole family. And trust me, when you’re feeling great, it shows in the photos!
4. Dads, Bring the Fun!
Dads, I get it—sometimes a photoshoot feels like pulling teeth. But trust me, your participation means the world to your family. These photos will become cherished memories, capturing the essence of your family right now. One day, when your kids are all grown up, these images will be a legacy they’ll treasure forever. So relax, have fun, and remember—happy wife, happy life!
5. Forget “Cheese” – Just Be Natural!
We all know that “cheese” smile, right? The one that looks, well, a little forced. Let’s leave that behind. Let your kids (and you) relax and engage naturally with the camera. Instead of demanding smiles, let’s all relax and have fun with your younger ones—Together we’ll get those genuine, heart-melting grins that you’ll love.
6. Let Loose and Have Fun
The best family photos aren’t posed—they’re the ones where you’re playing, laughing, and simply enjoying each other. Toss your kids in the air, sneak a kiss on your partner’s cheek, tell silly jokes, and just let go. The more fun you have, the more your connection will shine through the images.
7. It’s Okay Not to Look at the Camera
Not every photo needs to have everyone perfectly posed and smiling. Some of the most cherished shots are the candid ones—when you’re engaged with each other, sharing a genuine moment. These are the images that capture the heart and soul of your family’s bond.
So, if you’re planning your next family photoshoot, remember: it’s all about enjoying the moment. With a little preparation and a lot of love, we’ll create beautiful, authentic images that reflect the unique story of your family.
