Photographing people can be intimidating, but it helps a lot when you know the individual. We have to worry about lighting, camera angle, exposure, focus, and all of the other technical elements before a subject is introduced into the scene. Then not only do we need to find a flattering pose, but I must also do my best to coax great expressions from my subject, even if the person does not like having their photographs taken.
Mastering posing, with is an ongoing learning curve, is an invaluable piece of the equation. I have worked with clients who have stated that they don’t want to look too posed and specifically instead upon candids. But what is candids and is this what they really mean?
For them, pose is a four-letter word. They associate posing with stiff body positions and uncomfortable expressions. Candids are informal images, typically taken without the subject knowing they are being photographed - I do a lot of candids during Fore-day Morning and Kadooment. People often associate candid with relaxed, natural expressions.
However, what I have learned and what I have experienced is that in reality clients don’t really want candids - they are really trying to ask me to make them feel comfortable so the photos will show genuine expressions. Even if a client is uncomfortable with the word ‘pose’ I can still direct them into body positions and angles that will flatter them whilst helping achieve the expression that makes the shot stand out.
Every single client that steps in front of my camera is beautiful. Every single one. My job is to help the client appreciate his or her beauty.
In a way I should not use the word ‘pose’ - some people are put off by it. ‘Direction’ is a more appropriate word where together both the client and I work to create the best body position, expression, and camera angle to create a really great image.
If you have any questions or concerns about my direction, do always ask me your questions either in advance or during your photoshoot.
